How To Bypass Voltage Regulator On An Alternator

  1. Hello all, I'thousand in the middle off swapping my alternator, I've read up on how to bypass it but I've got myself dislocated, I have 2 plugs, 1 goes to the regulator and 1 goes on the alternator.
    Then my agreement is;
Green from the reg goes together with the bluish from the reg onto D+ on the alternator.

Ruby-red/white and black goes on B+ which is spliced together with the red cablevision from the reg.

So that' the wires at the reg end...

What happens with the plug at the alternator end? Are they just the other stop of the reg cables or am I missing something?

  2. At the alternator cease is where it connects via the brushes/slip rings to the field windings. The regulator adjusts the voltage by varying the field.
Have been working on my alternator, i got with engine tests ok with multi meter but am getting warning lite on as soon equally connected so a diode must exist breaking down, am going to use a 24v bulb and see if tin observe which one, think can strip it blindfolded by now lol, getting a working one from Paul so hopefully will be final time plumbing equipment it??
  3. Has your new alternator got an internal regulator?
  4. Information technology was external and changing to an internal
  5. Sad I wasnt very articulate, I'grand bypassing the regulator every bit the new one has ane inbuilt, I think I'm nearly there with it all I have left at the alternator is the green to connect to D+ , Brown to get to earth and Ruby-red/white, black and a cerise that I think go to B+ is that correct?
  6. You'll only need ii cables to the new alt: the thick B+ to the solenoid/battery, and the bluish D+ cable to the warning light. You tin can disconnect everything else.

<edit> Ooops, diagram is for a dynamo reg, but you get the idea...

  7. A better one of the external setup. Every bit above, y'all just demand B+ and D+ for internal reg. The alt is grounded through its case.

  8. I have connected the bluish and green together where the regulator was, is the green cablevision on the plug finish simply the other end of the green that'due south at the reg?
Likewise what is the cherry-red and the black cable for?
  9. Hither's the only flick of bus wiring with ext regulator I could detect. If information technology'due south correct, leave the socket to the alt disconnected, run the D+ line (red + blue) to the alt warning light terminal to the alt low-cal spade on the new alternator, connect the thick cable (mayhap) to the chief alt terminal. I'm not sure it should exist red/white - certain information technology'due south red on my van.

  10. So I tin connect the bluish to the two red cables and fit a spade connector on the crimson at the plug stop and go out everything else off, either that or fit a new red cablevision from the connector block and so I know it'due south proficient... Distressing I think I'yard over thinking it now, just don' desire to get it wrong
  11. By the diagram it seems similar that's right
  12. 1 of the red cables feeds the divide charge relay so should that go to the B+ with the other battery pb? Thanks for the info @snotty
  13. Pity I haven't got my caput in your engine compartment - would be much easier ;). Diagram should make some sense, if the wiring colours are the same every bit yours.

If the carmine cablevision to the divide accuse relay is a sparse i, operating the relay coil, information technology should connect to D+, so the relay pulls in when the engine starts. If you connect it to B+, the relay will be pulled in all the time.

  14. Ah ok that makes sense I think I've got information technology now, the diagram has helped a lot!
I will hopefully become it built up by the weekend ready for a examination fingers crossed!
  15. Fingers crossed. Should be straightforward. Obvious, but exist aware that the connections to the battery tin shift a lot of current if they're shorted to the chassis - sparks will wing!
  16. Archie lives! Got him running on Mon with a couple of hicups along the way! now I just need to swap my silly to a vacuum advanced to get rid of the flat spot!
Got a guy popping round this calendar week to make sure the carb and timing is spot on then he'southward ready for a test bulldoze! Not driven him in ages I can' wait!
Thanks for all your assistance @snotty
  17.
  18. Soooooo, been driving Archie this weekend and everything seemed fine, then this evening I started him up and his lights and dash lights were very dim which says to me that the battery isn't charging!
I'g going to check voltages tomorrow merely is there annihilation else which would cause this?
  19. Checked the voltage while running and it' merely 12.8v even at the alternator, accept I bought a dud or could it be an earth problem? Checked the main world straps which seem ok is there anything else?
